Freeze Services

Freeze services are a unique operation where fluid is pumped into the wellbore, tree, valve, or other component and frozen there by isolating anything above or below the freeze area. Freezing is a delicate task, and takes many years to perfect time and temperature control for an effective freeze. Freezes are usually performed when standard isolation practice cannot be performed. This may happen when valves are stuck, or tools are stuck preventing the use of bridge plugs or other isolation tools. During a freeze, a solution (often water based solutions) is pumped into the area to be frozen. The area may be boxed in and packed with shavings of dry ice, or wrapped with copper pipe and insulation through which liquid nitrogen is pumped. This freezes the section slowly from the outside in.

Once it has been determined the wellbore is sealed by the ice plug, the section above the freeze area is removed. The well is open to the outside, held only by the ice plug. A replacement section for whatever was taken off, valve, tubing, etc., is then made up above the freeze plug. The freeze area is unwrapped and allowed to thaw. It is almost as if the damaged section was never there. This process can save time and money verses a pump/kill operation to isolate surface equipment. It also prevents the possibility of damage to the formations from the kill fluids. Once unthawed, the well can immediately go back into service.
